The Bowthorpe Oak is both the largest-girthed British oak tree and arguably the oldest, at an estimated 1000 years. Approached through a farmyard and surrounded by contented hens, the tree’s hollow trunk is so large that it has been used for Sunday School summer picnics in the past. It was named one of the Tree Council’s 50 Great British Trees in 2002.
